Erik ten Hag explains Marcus Rashford selection at Wolverhampton Wanderers

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag once again said that it was "case closed" on the Marcus Rashford nightclub saga, with the Dutchman having no problems selecting him against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 26-year-old said that he was too unwell to train with the Red Devils on Friday, and he subsequently missed out against Newport County in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Rashford was pictured in Belfast at a nightclub on both Wednesday and Thursday evening, with the England international then heading back to Manchester on a private jet on Friday morning.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag reiterated that the "internal matter" had now been dealt with, as the forward had "taken responsibility" for his actions.

Rashford was left out of the starting XI for a Premier League game against Wolves in December 2022 after being late to a team meeting, but he has been named in the side at Molineux on Thursday evening, replacing Antony in the front three.

Ten Hag said that Rashford had been punished by being left out against Newport in the FA Cup, and it was now time to "move on" from the situation.

"We didn't select him on Sunday. He has taken responsibility. Case closed. We move on," said Ten Hag ahead of the clash with Wolves at Molineux.

Rashford has only managed four goals and six assists in 26 appearances in all competitions for the 20-time English champions during an underwhelming campaign.

However, the forward has netted in his last two Premier League appearances against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

There has been speculation surrounding Rashford's future since the nightclub saga, with both Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal thought to be keen on the Man United academy product.

However, it is understood that the Red Devils have no desire to sell a player who penned a new long-term contract last summer.

Ten Hag has made two changes to his XI from the side that started against Newport, with Rashford coming in for Antony, while Andre Onana is back from international duty with Cameroon, and he returns between the sticks in place of Altay Bayindir.

Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Casemiro are all back from recent problems, and the trio are in the first XI for the 20-time English champions.

There is another start at centre-forward for Rasmus Hojlund, meanwhile, with the Denmark international aiming to find the back of the net for a third match in a row. body check tags ::
