Wout Weghorst has said that he is happy to play anywhere for Manchester United, with the on-loan Burnley striker recently being used into a deeper position by Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag.

The 30-year-old, who arrived at Old Trafford in January, has been a regular for the 20-time English champions in recent weeks, playing nine times in all competitions, scoring once and providing one assist.

Weghorst has largely operated as a centre-forward since his move to Manchester, but he was used as a number 10 in the second half of the 2-0 win over Leeds United in the Premier League last weekend.

The Netherlands international then continued in that position against Barcelona on Thursday night, playing the full 90 minutes of the 2-2 draw in the Europa League as an attacking midfielder.

After the Leeds game last weekend, Ten Hag told reporters: "Wout, as a second striker, a no.10. I know him from [his] youth that he can play there. With Bruno [Fernandes] on the right and [Alejandro] Garnacho on the left, it was a dynamic to change the game and I think we can benefit from it.

"I think [Marcus] Rashford as a striker, Wout on the no.10 position and Bruno on the right brought more composure to our game."

Weghorst has said that he has not featured as an attacking midfielder since his "younger days", but the Dutchman is prepared to play anywhere to help the team this season.

"Yeah, that was really in my younger days, to be honest!" Weghorst told MUTV. "I think I was like 17 or 18 at the time, playing still as an amateur in the Netherlands but no, he mentioned it to me [at Leeds] at half-time that it could be an option to do some tactical switches.

"It happened in the second half and it went good for myself. It was actually new and the first time I'd played there but I quite liked it.

"The most important thing for me is to help the team. It helped us to win the match over there, doing also my defensive work. I took it on and, especially for the first time, I think I can be happy with it."

Weghorst has also said that it will be "a special moment" if he is able to score at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils currently preparing for back-to-back home games against Leicester City and Barcelona.

"Whether it's the first one or not, at the end as a striker you want to score goals. That's the best feeling, the most amazing feeling," he added.

"That's what you're doing it for as a striker. I'm waiting for the first one here at Old Trafford. Unfortunately it's taken a little bit too long already for myself but I have to stay quiet and just work really hard and do my thing.

"Then hopefully that will come soon. I think that will be a special moment."

Weghorst spent the first half of this season on loan at Besiktas from Burnley but ended his spell with the Turkish giants in order to make the move to Old Trafford.
