Manchester United have reportedly held talks with Benfica over a potential deal for 18-year-old midfielder Joao Neves.
The Red Devils are prioritising a new midfielder in the final stages of the transfer window, and they are seemingly making progress in their pursuit of Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat.
A recent report has claimed that the Morocco international is set to travel to England ahead of a medical with Man United.
While Man United are set to bolster their options in the middle of the park before Friday's transfer deadline, they are also on the lookout for future additions.
According to The Sun, the Red Devils have held discussions with Portuguese giants Benfica over signing midfield prospect Neves.
The report states that Benfica have indicated they are not willing to part ways until the end of the 2023-24 season.
However, there is a belief that they will consider sanctioning a January sale if they are knocked out of the Champions League group stage.
Benfica, who have reached the quarter-finals in the past two seasons, have been drawn in a group alongside Inter Milan, Red Bull Salzburg and Real Sociedad.
The youngster worked his way through Benfica's academy setup, before making his senior debut in a 3-0 defeat to Braga in December 2022.
Since making his first appearance for the club, Neves has gone on to feature in 24 competitive games, chipping in with one goal and two assists.
Chelsea are also said to be interested in Neves, but Benfica are reluctant to negotiate with the Blues following January's transfer saga involving Enzo Fernandez.
Benfica were left frustrated with the way negotiations played out, which ultimately led to Fernandez completing a £106.8m move to Stamford Bridge.
While Neves may be one for the future, Man United are reportedly close to completing the loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon.
The Red Devils are keen to strengthen the left side of their defence following the news that Luke Shaw could spend up to 10 weeks on the sidelines. body check tags ::
