Erik ten Hag has admitted that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has a decision to make over his future at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old centre-back has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Ten Hag last summer and started just eight Premier League games in the 2022-23 campaign.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw – naturally a left-back – have all been preferred in central defence ahead of Maguire, who is likely to begin on the substitutes' bench for this weekend's FA Cup final with Manchester City at Wembley.

Maguire joined Man United in 2019 from Leicester City for £80m, a world-record fee for a defender, but the Red Devils are believed to be willing to listen to offers for the England international this summer.

The centre-back, who has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, has acknowledged that he is keen to feature on a more regular basis for Man United.

Ten Hag has since revealed that Maguire is not happy with his current situation at the club, and it will be the Englishman's choice if he wishes to seek pastures new this summer.

Speaking to The Times, Ten Hag said: "No-one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well. He trains always on best levels, so with 100% effort.

"So he handles that situation well and he's in that manner and in his captaincy he's important for the squad. He has high competition there (at centre-back) with Raphael Varane, who's fantastic.

"Let's say I'm happy he's here and when we needed him he did his job. But it's also a decision he has to make."

Maguire may be required to move away from Man United and gain regular first-team football elsewhere if he wishes to remain a regular member of Gareth Southgate's England squad, after the Three Lions boss recently admitted that his lack of minutes is "concerning".

A recent report claims that Maguire could leave Old Trafford on loan this summer, with Italian quartet AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Roma – the latter managed by former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho – all keeping tabs on his situation.

Maguire has also attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, who failed to qualify for Europe after finishing eighth in the Premier League.

Newcastle United, who will be competing in next season's Champions League, and Europa Conference League finalists West Ham United have also been tipped to move for Maguire, as have Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Maguire, who has made a total of 175 appearances for Man United in all competitions over the last four seasons, is understood to be valued in the region of £40m. body check tags ::
