Stewart Downing has admitted that Middlesbrough "didn't play great" at times in their first match of the Championship season against Preston North End.
Aitor Karanka's side, who are one of the favourites for promotion to the Premier League this term, shared a goalless draw with last season's League One playoff winners.
The midfielder, who rejoined Boro from West Ham United earlier this summer, told Sky Sports News: "I know it's going to be tough finding room and you're going to get kicked, which is to be expected. We didn't play great at times but a point is well deserved.
"If we weren't challenging then there was no point in me moving. We're still trying to get players in, so hopefully we'll improve."
Middlesbrough are in action again on Wednesday when they face Oldham Athletic in the League Cup.
