Stewart Downing to return to Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough are looking to re-sign West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing, according to a report.

Middlesbrough are reportedly looking to re-sign Stewart Downing from West Ham United.

The 30-year-old midfielder is understood to be surplus to requirements at Upton Park under new manager Slaven Bilic.

Downing has been linked with a host of Premier League sides, including Newcastle United, Sunderland and Swansea City.

Leicester City are also said to be hunting the former England international's signature and are preparing a £7m bid.

However, Middlesbrough are in pole position to sign Downing and could complete a deal before pre-season training begins next week, according to the Northern Echo.

Downing made his Boro debut in 2002 after progressing through the ranks at the Riverside Stadium, helping the Teesiders win the League Cup in 2004 and reach the UEFA Cup final two years later.

He moved to Aston Villa for £12m in 2009 following Boro's relegation from the Premier League.

Downing has scored seven goals in 76 appearances for West Ham since joining them from Liverpool in 2011.
