Newcastle United secured their place in the third round of the Capital One Cup with a 2-0 win over Morecambe.
It was far from an easy task for the Premier League side against Jim Bentley's team as the home side had two efforts cleared off the line in the first half, while Magpies keeper Rob Elliot was forced into two great saves.
However, after the break Alan Pardew's side quality finally told as goals from Shola Ameobi and Sammy Ameobi earned them the win at the Globe Arena.
See how all the action unfolded in our commentary below.
Good evening and welcome to the live text commentary of the Capital One Cup clash between Morecambe and Newcastle United at the Globe Arena.
Morecambe booked their place in the second round with a victory over League One side Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to a goal from Ryan Williams.
Jim Bentley's side reached this stage of the competition last season before they were knocked out by the Magpies' North-East rivals Sunderland.
Newcastle entered the Capital One in the third round and that's as far as they got as they were knocked out by Manchester United at Old Trafford in a 2-1 defeat.
The teams have been released and we'll start with the home side.
MORECAMBE: Roche, Hughes, Diagne, Wright, Sampson, Williams, Ellison, Drummond, Fleming, Parrish, Amond
NEWCASTLE: Elliot, Debuchy, Yanga-Mbiwa, Good, Dummett, Bigirimana, Gosling, Sammy Ameobi, Vuckic, Marveaux, Gouffran.
Jim Bentley has made three changes to his team that beat Exeter City on Saturday. Andrew Wright, Padraig Amond and Stewart Drummond all come into the team for Chris McCready, Marcus Marshall and Alex Kenyon.
Alan Pardew has rung the changes from his side's draw with West Ham United at the weekend. He has made eight in total, as he hands a full debut to defender Curtis Good. Also coming into the team are Paul Dummett, Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling, Sammy Ameobi, Haris Vuckic, Yoan Gouffran and Rob Elliot. Only Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who captains the side, Mathieu Debuchy and Sylvain Marveaux are retained from the 0-0 draw with the Hammers.
Newcastle aren't in the greatest of form at the moment so their numerous changes come as a surprise. Their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening day along with the draw against West Ham highlighted the need for more new signings at the club, which supporters were keen to point out to director of football Joe Kinnear.
This match could have the hallmarks of an upset. The Magpies were knocked out of last season's FA Cup by Brighton and Hove Albion, so there is reason for caution for the visitors.
To ease any Newcastle fans' nerves, Morecambe's victory over Exeter on Saturday was just their second victory of the season including their win over Wolves in the last round. They've tasted defeat twice already this season to Wycombe Wanderers and were hammered 3-0 by Portsmouth two weeks ago.
Bit of history on Newcastle's record in this tournament. They are yet to win the League Cup but did finish as runners-up to Manchester City in 1976, when the Citizens ran out 2-1 victors.
Morecambe have a chance to equal their furthest progression in this competition with a win over the Magpies. They reached the third round of the League Cup in the 2007-2008, which is their best finish to date.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew believes that the young players in his team can use this game as a "platform" to further progress their careers at the club.
The players are making their way out onto the pitch at the Globe Arena and we should be underway shortly.
The Morecambe mascot joins the team in the pre-match handshakes much to the bemusement of the Newcastle players. You don't get that in the Premier League.
Morecambe are looking like they're going to lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Sampson leading the line down the middle, being flanked either side by Amond and Ellison, who notched both his side's goals in the victory over Exeter at the weekend.
Newcastle will go in with a 4-4-1-1 with Yoan Gouffran leading the line up front in the absence of Loic Remy and Papiss Cisse.
We're underway in this Capital One Cup clash.
Sloppy start so far as both sides give away cheap free kick and both keepers knock the ball long into their opponents boxes but the crosses are easily cleared.
First clear opening for Newcastle, as Gosling breaks forward in midfield and spreads the ball to Ameobi. He gets to the byline and crosses towards the middle where the midfielder continues his run, but he heads the ball just over the bar.
A few nerves from Morecambe so far, as they're being a bit carless with the ball and are gifting it back to Newcastle in dangerous areas.
Better from the hosts as Williams feeds the ball to Ellison with his back to goal, he in turn finds Sampson on the left with a neat lay off. The striker advances on goal but he hits a tame shot at Elliot. Decent move from the Shrimps.
CHANCE! From a Morecambe throw in Debuchy and Gosling get in each others way allowing Fleming to advance with the ball, he shoots from the edge of the area but Elliot makes the save.
OFF THE LINE!! So close for Morecambe. A corner comes in from the right as Hughes wins the header in the area and his effort looks goalbound before Gosling sticks out a foot on the line and keeps the scores level as he turns the ball away.
What a chance that was as Newcastle have been rocked by the League Two side here early on.
Yellow Card! Fleming goes into the book for a robust challenge on Debuchy. It's not the best tackle in the world and he may have been lucky to stay on the field. Fortunately for the Magpies the French right-back looks ok.
Ameobi gets in behind the Morecambe defence and he whips a left footed cross low into the box but Parrish manages to stick a foot out and clear the danger.
Chaos in the Newcastle penalty area as a throw-in travels all the way into the box, Sampson tries to have a shot but slips, Fleming waits on the edge of the area to strike it but Gosling nips in and clears. It's all hands to the pumps for the Magpies at the moment.
Debuchy is down again for the Magpies he's been in the wars so far this evening. Again it doesn't look too serious as he's back on his feet.
That man Debuchy is in the action again, he raids down the right and lifts a cross into the area where he finds the head of Gouffran but he can't direct his header goalwards.
OFF THE LINE!!! Again Morecambe see the ball cleared off the line and it's that man Gosling again, as he chests the ball clear this time after Amond's header from a corner looked to creeping in at the near post.
Newcastle are really under the cosh here. Gosling has been superb on two occasions now to keep the scores level. There might have been a shout for a penalty as well as Sampson looked to be held in the area.
One of area of joy that the Magpies are having is down the left through Ameobi. This time he beats the challenge of Parrish and gets to the byeline, but the right-back gets back at him and clears the danger before the winger can cross the ball.
Debuchy gets forward again down the right for Newcastle, he looks up and whips a cross into the box for the run of Gosling, who from 20-yards out can't beat Roache. That's the second time a Magpies player has headed from that distance to no avail, they need to get deeper in the box for those to go in!
CHANCE!! Newcastle try and fail to play offside and Amond gets in behind, he powers a shot at goal and Elliot has to be at his best to turn the ball behind.
CHANCE!! Williams hits another dangerous corner into the area, which sends the Newcastle defence into a panic as the ball pinballs around the box, but no player in red and white can turn it into the net.
SAVE!! Morecambe go close again, as Sampson slips a ball in behind for Amond but his low effort is brilliantly saved by Elliot, who does well on the ground to push the rebound away with his hand before any Shrimps player can react.
Gouffran goes down and wins a free kick for the Magpies 25-yards from goal. Can they relieve the pressure with a surprise goal.
Bigirimana lines up the free kick from distance and strikes it powerfully at goal but Roche turns his shot over the bar.
Newcastle are starting to increase the pressure on the Morecambe goal, Ameobi waits on the edge of the area from a Marveaux corner, the ball is cleared to him and he unleashes a shot at goal, which looks to be on target before Ellison puts in a great block.
Morecambe's turn to threaten from a set-piece and Williams drills an effort over the wall at goal and this time Elliot can't hold the shot but he's bailed out by Good who clears the danger.
The hosts are just slowing down as we approach the break. They've put a lot of effort into the first 45 minutes and are just starting to blow hard, the break could be coming at the right time for them.
Just to emphasize that point, Williams picks the ball up in midfield but fires his pass way above the head of Sampson and out for a goal kick.
Bigirimana loses the ball as he gets trucked in a challenge with Ellison, he finds Amond with a short pass and the striker drills a shot at goal but Yanga-Mbiwa puts a great block and ends the attack.
HALF-TIME: Morecambe 0-0 Newcastle
Half-time and the Premier League side are very lucky still to be level in this game. Dan Gosling has saved Newcastle twice with excellent blocks on the line from two headed efforts from corners from Amond and Hughes.
Gosling was not the only one keeping the Magpies level, as keeper Rob Elliot made a few excellent saves to deny Amond and Fleming as Newcastle's defence has been cut apart on more than one occasion by the Shrimps.
Alan Pardew will also be concerned by his side's lack of attacking intent, as they've had just two shots on target and haven't really troubled Roche with either. Sammy Ameobi has looked a threat on the left, but he can't do it all by himself for the visitors.
Substitution: Shola Ameobi comes on for Newcastle to replace Haris Vuckic.
We're back underway at the Globe Arena.
Better from Newcastle to open the half as Shola Ameobi collects the ball outside the box and turns looking for the run of Sammy Ameobi but he plays his pass just too quickly for his brother to latch on to. Better intent from the Magpies.
CHANCE!! Shola Ameobi is played onside by the Morecambe defence from Gosling's through ball. He's one-on-one with the keeper but he blasts his shot well over the bar. What a miss!!
Newcastle are starting to find more space as Sammy Ameobi runs forward down the left, but Drummond does well to get across from midfield to dispossess the winger before he can bare down on goal.
More success for the Magpies down the left as Sammy Ameobi releases Dummett down the left, he gets to the byeline but his cross is straight at Roche, who gathers with ease.
CHANCE!! Yanga-Mbiwa heads the ball clear from a cross from the right straight into the path of Sampson, who unleashes a left-footed volley at goal but his effort goes just wide of the post.
Substitution: Morecambe make their first change as Marcus Marshall replaces Padraig Amond.
CHANCE!! Shola Ameobi flicks on a corner and the ball loops towards Marveaux, who shoots first time on his left foot but crashes his effort over the bar. That was a golden opportunity.
Another half-chance this time for Sammy Ameobi as he collects the ball 25-yards from goal, but he drags a left-footed shot wide of the target, with teammates available in the penalty area.
CHANCE!! Morecambe respond to the Newcastle pressure as Williams feeds Sampson who turns Good but fires his effort just over the crossbar.
Newcastle clear upfield and Shola Ameobi gets in behind his marker but Roche does well to read the danger as he races out of his goal to collect the ball.
Substitution: Hatem Ben Arfa comes on for Yoan Gouffran.
Williams raids forward for the home side, he doesn't have any support, so has a crack at goal himself but he drags his shot wide of the post.
It's Newcastle's turn to hit back as Dummett goes unchallenged for the length of the field, so he decides to take a strike at goal from 25-yards out and his effort goes just past the post.
Marshall does extremely well for the hosts down the right as he drives down the pitch under duress from Dummett, he looks up and finds Williams, who in turn plays in Sampson, who shoots, but his effort goes well over the bar.
All hands to the pumps against for the Magpies as Williams knocks a ball into the area, Ellison gets up looking to trouble Elliot but Yanga-Mbiwa is there to hoof the ball clear.
Ben Arfa cuts inside from the left and finds Shola Ameobi who peels off his marker, the striker lays the ball off for Gosling who shoots first time, but Hughes is there to make an excellent block.
Newcastle up the ante with several crosses into the box, but they can't find the head of a black and white shirt. Eventually, Gosling cuts the ball back to Sammy Ameobi on the edge of the area, but he scuffs his shot wide.
A loose ball finds its way to Parrish on the edge of the area, he shapes to shoot but tries to find Sampson but he loses the ball and Sammy Ameobi breaks upfield.
GOAL!! Morecambe 0-1 Newcastle (Shola Ameobi)
Newcastle take the lead and it's so cruel for Morecambe as Shola Ameobi's deflected effort trickles past Roche into the net, after Ben Arfa had found him in space on the edge of the area.
Frustrations boil over for Morecambe as Kenyon and Ellison get involved in a scrap with Shola Ameobi, as Newcastle win a free kick.
Substitution: Moussa Sissoko replaces Sylvain Marveaux.
Three minutes of added time for Morecambe to get back into this game.
Morecambe pile into the Newcastle box and somehow force a corner as Good heads the ball behind under pressure from Ellison.
Roche goes up for the corner and the delivery is good from Williams but Elliot does well to punch the ball clear and Yanga-Mbiwa does well to head the second ball away as well.
GOALL!!! Morecambe 0-2 Newcastle (Sammy Ameobi)
Sammy Ameobi ends the tie with a superb individual goal as he collects the ball on a counterattack and beats two defenders before slotting the ball past Roche. A great effort from the winger as the Magpies all but seal their place in the third round of the cup.
FULL-TIME: Morecambe 0-2 Newcastle
Newcastle progress to the third round of the Capital One Cup but it was far from plain sailing for the Magpies as they had to overcome a tough Morecambe side.
Jim Bentley's side had their chances in the first half and were guilty of not putting them away against quality opposition, which has been their downfall.
Newcastle were far from their best, but they held out against the League Two side and punished them when they had their chances and will now host Championship side Leeds United in the third round.
Thanks for joining Sports Mole's commentary of this evening's Capital One Cup clash, until next time, goodbye.
