Newcastle United secure a thrilling 6-2 victory over Norwich City in Sunday's Premier League clash at St James' Park, with Georginio Wijnaldum bagging four goals.

Georginio Wijnaldum scored four goals as his Newcastle United secured a thrilling 6-2 victory over hapless Norwich City in Sunday's Premier League clash at St James' Park.

The hosts broke the deadlock just before the 15-minute mark when Moussa Sissoko drifted inside and played in Wijnaldum, who duly rifled low past goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Robbie Brady came within a whisker of pulling the Canaries level when his 30-yard strike cannoned off the post in the 17th minute, but they only had to wait three more minutes for Dieumerci Mbokani to volley home from Martin Olsson's cross and re-establish parity.

Wijnaldum put Steve McClaren's charges back in front 26 minutes in by heading home another excellent Sissoko delivery, before Ayoze Perez finished off an initially blocked effort for his side's third.

It took just one minute for Norwich to get back within a goal, however, as Olsson's pinpoint cross from the right was met by a volley from the unmarked Nathan Redmond.

The first half ended with the Magpies 3-2 up, but it would get even better for them when, in the 64th minute, Aleksandar Mitrovic chested down Sissoko's long ball and thumped a shot into the back of the net.

Just two minutes later the hosts made it five as Wijnaldum secured his hat-trick, thanks to a header from Daryl Janmaat's cross from the left.

If that was not enough, the former PSV Eindhoven man struck a sixth for Newcastle - his fourth of the game - by receiving the ball on the left, cutting inside and firing into the top corner from 25 yards.

With the Toon Army in dreamland, the full time whistle confirmed the Tyneside outfit's first win of the season and edged them off the bottom of the Premier League table.
