Newcastle United have moved into fifth position in the Premier League table courtesy of a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James' Park.
Hwang Hee-chan came off the bench to level the scores in the 70th minute after Alexander Isak had sent the home side ahead in the 26th minute.
However, Miguel Almiron scored the winner in the 79th minute, with Newcastle moving above Liverpool into fifth position, now just four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with two games in hand on Antonio Conte's side.
Wolves, meanwhile, remain 13th in the table, just three points ahead of 18th-placed Bournemouth, with Julen Lopetegui's side involved in the relegation mix at this stage of the campaign.
Newcastle's win is their first in the Premier League since the middle of January, with the Magpies drawing three and losing two of their last five fixtures ahead of this contest.
Wolves had a huge shout for a penalty in the 21st minute when Nick Pope appeared to knock Raul Jimenez to the ground inside the box, but neither the referee nor VAR were interested.
Newcastle made a slow start to the match, but they took the lead in the 27th minute of the contest when Isak expertly headed a Kieran Trippier free kick into the back of the net from inside the penalty box.
The Magpies came close once again in the 28th minute, with Isak's pace stretching the Wolves backline before he delivered into the penalty box, but Joe Willock's low strike was deflected just wide of the post.
Pope had to fly across his goal to keep out a powerful strike from Jimenez in the 30th minute, before Isak had a goal-bound strike blocked by Max Kilman during an open period of the match.
Newcastle then hit the crossbar in the 35th minute through Bruno Guimaraes, with the midfielder heading against the woodwork after Dan Burn had found his teammate from a corner.
Wolves hit the woodwork in the 39th minute, with Daniel Podence working space outside the penalty box before striking a low effort off the base of the post.
Jacob Murphy then tested Jose Sa with a strike down the other end, as Newcastle looked to double their advantage, but it was 1-0 to the home side at the half-time interval.
Ruben Neves had the first half-chance of the second period, missing the target from distance, with the midfielder able to continue despite picking up an injury in the first half.
Pedro Neto then brought a smart save from Pope in the 58th minute following a quick free kick, with Wolves looking to level the scores at St James' Park, before Sa denied Trippier from a set piece down the other end.
Pope had to get down to make another excellent save to keep out a Joao Moutinho effort in the 64th minute, but the pressure eventually paid off for the visitors, as they levelled the scores in the 70th minute.
A slip from Trippier saw the defender pass the ball straight to Hee-chan inside the Newcastle box, and with Pope already committed, the Wolves forward had the simple task of converting into an empty net.
Eddie Howe's side were only behind for nine minutes, though, with Almiron coming off the bench to fire his team back into the lead.
The attacker played a one-two with Willock before facing up Sa, and his effort took a deflection, which wrong-footed Sa, on its way into the back of the net.
Wolves were unable to launch another response, with Newcastle, who should have scored a third in stoppage time through Sven Botman, relatively comfortable in the latter stages, securing a huge three points to get their top-four challenge back on track.
Newcastle will continue their league campaign away to Nottingham Forest on Friday, while Wolves will be bidding to return to winning ways when they welcome Leeds United to Molineux on Saturday. body check tags ::
