Sports Mole

On Thursday, French giants Paris Saint-Germain Women will welcome German champions Bayern Munich Women to Stade Jean Bouin.

PSG suffered a disappointing defeat to Ajax in their opening Women's Champions League group game, while Bayern had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Roma.

Match preview

PSG were forced to negotiate a qualifying tie against Manchester United after finishing runners-up in Division 1 Feminine last season.

The French side played out a 1-1 draw at Leigh Sports Village, before they recorded a 3-1 victory in the return leg to advance to the main draw, where they have been placed in a difficult group alongside Bayern, Ajax and Roma.

With Group C expected to be highly competitive, PSG's hopes of reaching the knockout rounds suffered a setback on matchday one when they fell to a 2-0 away defeat against Ajax following first-half goals from Tiny Hoekstra and Sherida Spitse.

Jocelyn Precheur's side looked set to experience more disappointment in Sunday's league clash with Fleury 91 when Ewelina Kamczyk cancelled out Marie-Antoinette Katoto's opener, but Jackie Groenen proved to be PSG's hero, scoring a 97th-minute winner to snatch all three points.

They will now turn their focus back to European action, and with the hosts desperate to get off the mark, they can take confidence from the fact that they have avoided defeat in their last three Champions League meetings with Bayern (W2, D1).

The German champions have made an impressive start to the 2023-24 season, winning seven and drawing three of their 10 competitive matches.

Although they have enjoyed a fine run of form, the Bavarians would have been disappointed to give up a two-goal lead in their opening Champions League game against Roma.

Bayern were seemingly on course to beat the Italian champions following a Jovana Damnjanovic strike and an Elena Linari own goal, however, Roma fought back scoring in the 58th and 90th minute to ensure that the spoils were shared on matchday one.

After learning their lessons, Bayern had no such trouble in protecting a two-goal lead in Saturday's away game against Werder Bremen, with first-half efforts from Magdalena Eriksson and Katharina Naschenweng guiding the Bavarians to a 2-0 victory, which keeps them top of the Frauen-Bundesliga table.

Thursday's visitors may have struggled in recent meetings with PSG, but they do usually produce the goods in the group phase, having won eight of their last 10 group matches in the Champions League (D1, L1).

Team News

The hosts remain without the services of defender Paulina Dudek and midfielder Oriane Jean-Francois due to knee injuries.

First-choice goalkeeper Constance Picaud and forward Sandy Baltimore have also been ruled out of Thursday's home meeting.

After being left out of the lineup at the weekend, Sakina Karchaoui and Korbin Albert are expected to return to the starting XI.

As for the visitors, they recently confirmed that Ana Maria Guzman had undergone surgery after sustaining a knee injury on the last international break with Colombia.

Guzman is joined on the sidelines by Cecilia Ran Runarsdottir, Pernille Harder, Weronika Zawistowska and Carolin Simon.

Sarah Zadrazil and Linda Dallmann are set to return to the lineup after dropping down to the bench for Sunday's league win over Bremen.

Paris Saint-Germain Women possible starting lineup:
Kiedrzynek; Le Guilly, De Almeida, Hunt, Karchaoui; Geyoro, Groenen, Albert; Martens, Chawinga, Katoto

Bayern Munich Women possible starting lineup:
Grohs; Gwinn, Viggosdottir, Eriksson, Naschenweng; Zadrazil, Stanway; Dallmann, Damnjanovic, Buhl; Schuller

We say: Paris Saint-Germain Women 2-2 Bayern Munich Women

Bayern have won just two of their nine European games against French sides (D2, L5), and as a result, we think that the German champions may have to settle for a point when they make the trip to Paris on Wednesday.
