Poland captain Marcin Wasilewski looking for "breakthrough" win over England

Poland captain Marcin Wasilewski aims to beat England in Warsaw on Tuesday, in what he is hoping will be a "breakthrough match" for his nation.

Poland captain Marcin Wasilewski has said that beating England in Warsaw on Tuesday would represent a "breakthrough" for his side following a disappointing showing at Euro 2012.

The tournament co-hosts failed to progress beyond the group stage in June, taking just two points from their three matches.

Following their early elimination, Poland have begun World Cup qualifying with a 2-2 draw in Montenegro and a 2-0 win over Moldova in Wroclaw.

Despite making a solid start to their Group H campaign, Wasilewski believes that his side are in need of a boost.

He said: "Can this game make up for Euros? I think such a match is very much needed, especially against such an opponent as England.

"We are all aware of the high quality of the opponent but a few years ago we had a similar meeting with Portugal when everyone thought we would lose.

"We won and after that our faith grew and the faith of our fans increased tremendously and helped us advance into the European Championship finals. I hope this will also be a breakthrough match for Poland."

England have met Poland in competitive fixtures on 15 occasions, winning nine and losing just one.
