Relive Sports Mole's coverage from Deepdale where Preston North End hosted Oldham Athletic in League One.

Preston North End welcomed Oldham Athletic to Deepdale on Monday night with the view of keeping their unbeaten record intact.

The Lilywhites had won their first league match of the campaign prior to the fixture, while the Latics were yet to draw a game.

However, Preston moved into the playoff spots thanks to a narrow win.

Read how the match unfolded in our live commentary below.

Good evening and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage from Deepdale where Preston North End welcome Oldham Athletic in League One action.
These two sides meet having experienced very different starts to the season.
Preston go into the clash undefeated so far after their opening five games, however, they have only managed to win one of those games which came in the form of a 3-0 victory at Walsall last time out.
On the other hand, it's been one or the other for Oldham. They have not yet finished a match level with their opposition and they have two wins and three losses from their opening five matches. They go into this match off the back of a late 1-0 defeat to Tranmere.
Right, time for some team news.
PRESTON XI: Rudd, Keane, Laird, Huntington, Clarke, Wright, Davies, Beavon, Holmes, Byram, Buchanan
So Simon Grayson is without Chris Humphrey for the match, with the midfielder being on international duty for Jamaica. However, Iain Hume has returned from representing Canada, but only makes the bench.
Will Hayhurst and John Welsh have been recalled to the bench, while Jack King remains out injured after undergoing foot surgery.
Here is the Preston bench.
PRESTON BENCH: Stuckmann, Wroe, Garner, Welsh, Mousinho, Hayhurst, Hume
Let's see what the opposition are fielding tonight.
OLDHAM XI: Oxley, Grounds, Wesolowski, Tarkowski, Schmeltz, Smith, Rooney, Lanzoni, Dayton, Mills, Philliskirk
Boss Lee Johnson is without Edijs Joksts (Latvia), Kirk Millar and Carl Winchester (both Northern Ireland), who are all featuring in U21 qualifiers.
Charlie MacDonald is fit enough for a place on the bench after missing the last three games with a dead leg, while Connor Brown is still out with a knee injury.
However, Danny Philliskirk retains his place up front after netting twice on his debut in Preston's last outing which came in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last Tuesday.
OLDHAM BENCH: Kusunga, MacDonald, Montano, Mellor, Rachubka, Clarke-Harris, Rodgers
Both sides are out on the field and exchanging pre-match handshakes. Preston are wearing their white home shirts with navy shorts and white socks, while Oldham are sporting their blue home kit with white shorts and blue socks.
Oldham will have kick off and play from right to left in this first half.
KICK OFF! Oldham get us underway.
Nothing to report as of yet that's worth noting. Neither side has yet to create a chance at goal and both are exchanging possession frequently.
By the way, Preston striker Kevin Davies, who joined the club after leaving Bolton Wanderers in the summer, is still on the hunt for his first goal for his new team.
CLOSE! Strong stuff from Oldham who are playing some lovely fast, passing football. The ball is worked to Schmeltz on the right, who cuts inside to the edge of the D before hitting a low shot across the face of goal, but the ball takes a deflection and it goes behind for a corner.
Schmeltz smashes his corner towards the far post, but Davies is on hand to clear the danger for Preston.
Lanzoni goes down the right for Oldham and plays a one-two with Schmeltz, before ballooning a cross behind and into the stand. Despite that, Oldham have been the better side in the opening 10 minutes of this match, but it remains goalless.
Lee Holmes shows a good turn of pace before being clipped by former Southampton teammate Joseph Mills. Free kick to Preston.
The ball is floated into the box before Oldham can clear. However, Preston are given another free kick right on the edge of the D after Schmeltz wielded a high foot towards Laird.
GOAL! Preston North End 1-0 Oldham Athletic (Stuart Beavon)
The home side take the lead against the run of play, and the goalscorer knew nothing about this. Byrom steps up to curl the free kick towards the top right corner from 25 yards out. Oxley looks to have it covered in the Oldham goal, but the effort takes a wicked deflection off the head of Beavon, who was at the end of the wall, and changes direction before sailing into the back of the net.
CHANCE! Oldham have not one but two opportunities to score here. Wesolowski plays a pass from the right square to the edge of the box where Schmeltz is lurking, but he swings and completely misses the ball. It carries on and lands at feet of Mills, but he can only drag his shot wide back across goal.
CHANCE! Preston get caught napping at the back, and the ball falls to Rooney about 25 yards out in the centre. However, it shot is skied high and wide over the bar.
SAVE! Schmeltz has been very lively so far in this match and he breaks free down the right. He meets the ball over the top with a low thumping first-time effort, but Rudd is equal to the shot.
Oldham have been by far the better team in this match, Schmeltz has been great so far, but they trail.
Mills has taken two corner in a row from the right with his left boot, and has twice forced Rudd into making a direct save.
OFF THE LINE! How Oldham are not level I will never know. Preston are groggy, and Tarkowski rises highest at a Schmeltz corner, and thinks that he has found an equaliser. However, Buchanan is on the line to make a superb block, before his teammates can scramble it away.
Oldham are absolutely dominant at the moment, Preston are really hanging on.
Preston just need a spell where they can hold on to the ball. Oldham are dominating the possession count, and would surely be ahead if it wasn't for Rudd in the home goal.
Rooney nearly sneaks in ahead of Rudd after the keeper goes to hold a low cross from Mills, but then he panics and opts to shoot from a ridiculously acute angle, which ends in the ball flashing across goal and out for a throw.
PENALTY TO PRESTON!
What a shocker for Oldham, they've been all over Preston but could now be 2-0 down. Wesolowski goes over to retrieve a loose ball, but Davies nips in front of him and gets tripped. Davies will take the spot kick.
GOAL! Preston North End 2-0 Oldham Athletic (Kevin Davies)
What a brilliant penalty this is from Davies, who nets his first goal for Preston. He steps up and cooly, and side-foots the ball into the top right corner of the net, almost the perfect penalty.
They say football is a funny old game, and the fact that Oldham are 2-0 down just proves that. They dominated the match, but two little mistakes have ended up costing them so far.
Corner to Oldham. Can they get one back before half time? They deserve it that's for sure.
Schmeltz's corner is very deep and headed back across the box by Tarkowski, but Preston can clear their lines.
We'll have another two minutes of added time to go.
YELLOW CARD Tom Clarke goes into the book for Preston after lunging into a tackle.
CHANCE! From the resulting free kick, Schmeltz curves the ball in from just near the left corner flag, and Tarkowski manages to get his head to the ball. He glances it over though, and out for a goal kick.
HALF TIME: Preston North End 2-0 Oldham Athletic
Remarkably, Preston are in front. Oldham have dominated this match so far, yet goals from Beavon and Davies have given Preston the lead at the interval.
The teams are back out at Deepdale, and we're ready for the second half.
KICK OFF! Preston get the game back underway, and will shoot from right to left in this half.
CHANCE! Oldham start on the front foot once more, and Mills runs across the edge of the box from the left before getting a right-footed shot away. It was on target, but lacked the power to trouble Rudd.
Oldham have to score the next goal if they are to get back into this.
Oldham whip a corner in from the left into the middle of a crowded area. Rudd comes racing out of goal to punch the danger clear.
CHANCE! That should be the game killed off. Preston hit Oldham on the break and work it from right to left across the box, where Laird is left completely unmarked on the far side. He has loads of time to pick his spot, but slots the ball back across the face of goal and wide. That should be 3-0.
CHANCE! Now Davies goes close as Preston start to enjoy some attacking possession of their own. He picks up the ball just inside the box, but can his shot curls away from the bottom corner and wide of the target.
No chances in the last few moments. Oldham have been able to deliver a few set pieces into the box, but Preston have been able to deal with all of them.
CHANCE! Great opportunity for Rooney to get Oldham back in this match. The cross comes all the way from the left to the far post where Rooney is hiding. However, he seems to get caught between two minds and doesn't quite nod it back to his teammate nor does he knock it towards goal.
Oldham need to make the most of chances like those. 25 minutes to go and they have two goals to make back.
OLDHAM CHANGES Cristian Montano and Charlie MacDonald are on in place of Sidney Schmeltz and Adam Rooney.
Mills have a free kick right out on the right touchline, which he tries to curl into the near corner of the net and catch Rudd off guard. But the effort goes straight to the keeper.
PRESTON CHANGES Scott Laird and Joel Byrom are off, with William Hayhurst John Welsh coming on.
CHANCE! Preston have another chance to kill the game off, this time through Stuart Beavon. He weaves his way past a few Oldham players down the centre before shooting just wide of the left post.
OLDHAM CHANGE Jonson Clarke-Harris in on in place of James Wesolowski.
Oldham are still pressing forward, but can't seem to create anything. Preston have been a lot better in this second half and look as if they are going to enjoy a win here.
GOAL! Preston North End 2-1 Oldham Athletic (James Tarkowski)
Game on and what a header this is from Tarkowski. The corner is whipped into the near post from the left, and Tarkowski is first on the scene to power it into the far corner. Is it too late?
YELLOW CARD Lee Holmes is booked for a poor tackle.
The Oldham fans are in fine voice, and we have a great finish on the cards here.
Oldham have a free kick on the right which Mills floats into a threatening position to the far post. However, Rudd is there to make a good catch under pressure.
PRESTON CHANGE Joe Garner is on for the final few minutes to replace Stuart Beavon.
YELLOW CARD Joe Garner is straight into the book for a nasty challenge on Tarkowski. He could have seen red for that from some referees.
There will be four added minutes to play.
Oldham are fighting to win back possession, but Preston are doing well to hold onto the ball and try to run down the clock.
Welsh wins a free kick on the halfway for Preston, and that should be that.
FULL TIME: Preston North End 2-1 Oldham Athletic
So that's it. Preston come away with the win thanks to first-half goals from Beavon and Davies. Tarkowski got a late goal back for Oldham, but they couldn't manage to find the equaliser that they deserved.
That's all from me, I hope you enjoyed the match. Goodnight.
