Real Madrid defeat city-rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time to secure their 10th European title.

Real Madrid have defeated city-rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time to secure their much-coveted 10th European Cup.

Los Blancos fell behind through Diego Godin's first-half header, and it required a late goal from defender Sergio Ramos to send the game into extra time at the Estadio da Luz, as Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo eventually won the contest in style for Real.

Having been deemed fit enough to start despite carrying a minor hamstring injury, Diego Costa could only last nine minutes of the final before being replaced by Adrian Lopez for Atletico.

Despite the early setback, Diego Simeone's side managed to get in the first shot of the night moments later through Raul Garcia, but his effort failed to truly trouble Iker Casillas.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Bale intercepted a poor Tiago pass before setting off towards goal and found himself in space to get a strike away. The Welshman's effort from 12 yards failed to find the target, however, with the chance going begging.

The missed opportunity proved costly four minutes later when Godin opened the scoring in bizarre fashion. With Real initially cleared an Atletico corner, the ball came back into the box. The out-rushing Casillas failed to get to it and Godin saw his flicked header trickle over the line.

Los Blancos came close to levelling the match 10 minutes after the restart when a Ronaldo free kick deflected off the Atletico wall, forcing Thibaut Courtois to parry the effort over the bar.

It was a sign of things to come with Real creating numerous second-half opportunities to pull level against the team they finished three points behind in La Liga this season.

First, Ronaldo was inches away from connecting with Ramos's cross into the box, before Isco was picked out by Karim Benzema, who dragged his resulting effort wide.

Bale went on another of his trademark runs from out wide once more with the clock ticking down, but he was again unable to find the target at the end of the move, as he skewed the ball wide from close range.

Six minutes from time Angel di Maria slid a low cross across the face of the six-yard box, but there was no player in a white shirt around to apply the finishing touch.

Just as it looked as though Atletico were going to hold out for the win, Ramos headed home Luka Modric's cross to make it 1-1 in the fourth minute of injury time to send the game into extra time.

Both sides probed away in search of a winner, with the first real chance of the additional 30 minutes falling to Godin, who managed to get his head on another set piece, only for Casillas to catch the effort.

Then, in the 110th minute of the historic match being contested between two rivals from the same city for the first time, Bale nodded home from close range when Di Maria's saved shot fell into his path to put Real on their way.

Marcelo added goal number three moments later when he powered a long-range shot into the back of the net, before Ronaldo put the icing on the cake in his homeland from the spot to wrap up La Decima.
