Real Madrid booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey following a 2-0 win over Osasuna on Wednesday.

Los Blancos entered the tie as the firm favourites having claimed a 2-0 win in the first leg at the Bernabeu last week.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel di Maria secured another 2-0 victory for the away side, who will meet Espanyol in the next round.

Madrid ended with nine men, however, with Alvaro Morata forced off through injury and Fabio Coentrao receiving a red card on his return to the side.

Was the result fair?

Madrid were not at their best this evening, but they did not need to be against a below-par Osasuna side. In truth, this tie was over as a contest last week when Osasuna failed to secure an away goal at the Bernabeu. The home side had their moments this evening, but never really threatened to harm Los Blancos. A 2-0 scoreline was just about a fair reflection of the events in Pamplona.

Osasuna's performance

Osasuna started brightly with a strong atmosphere inside the stadium, but they simply were not in the match after Ronaldo had scored the opening goal. They must be credited for remaining compact in defence, but even the most ardent of supporters would have found it difficult to make a case for them turning around a 2-0 deficit from the first leg. It was a laboured performance from the Spanish outfit, who now must switch their attention to league matters as they attempt to secure their La Liga status.

Real Madrid's performance

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect for Carlo Ancelotti this evening will be another clean sheet, which is their fourth in a row. It is difficult to judge Madrid's performance due to Osasuna's state of mind, but it was a professional outing from the capital outfit. There was not a single period in the game where they did not appear in total control, but they were guilty of some poor finishing when the match become stretched in the latter stages.

Angel di Maria: The Argentine was deployed in a central midfield position in the first period before switching to attack in the second half. Finally, he played at left-back when Coentrao was sent off. The 25-year-old excelled in all areas and added gloss to his performance with a fine finish just before the hour.

Biggest gaffe

No real surprises here. There appeared to be no real danger when Ronaldo struck a free kick towards Osasuna goalkeeper Andres Fernandez after 21 minutes, but the Spaniard allowed it to slip through his hands. Replays showed that Fernandez had attempted to punch clear, but ended up with the ball between his legs. The tie was all but over in that one moment.

Referee performance

It was certainly a busy first half for Antonio Mateu, with the Spaniard issuing five yellow cards, including one for Osasuna forward Oriol Riera, who wasn't even on the pitch. The home side were also unhappy about his decision to let play continue in the build-up to Madrid's second, but he rightly dismissed Coentrao in the latter stages for a second bookable offence. It was a tough night for the official, but he got the majority of the decisions correct.

Osasuna: Osasuna return to La Liga action this weekend with a trip to Granada on Saturday evening.

Real Madrid: Los Blancos also return to their league duties this weekend with a trip to basement side Real Betis.
