Top five Real Madrid wins over Barcelona

Ahead of Saturday's El Clasico, Sports Mole looks back on five of the best Real Madrid wins over Barcelona.

Barcelona and Real Madrid will contest the 258th El Clasico at the Camp Nou on Saturday evening.

Visiting Los Blancos have won 94 of those meetings and Sports Mole has trawled through the record books to pick out what we believe are five of the most significant victories over their greatest rivals.

You can find out which matches made the selection below.

1. Real Madrid 5-0 Barcelona, October 1953

Alfredo di Stefano had only joined Madrid two weeks earlier, but he was hoisted straight into the starting lineup for the visit of Barcelona. The Argentine made himself an instant hero in the eyes of the Bernabeu with two goals in a 5-0 victory. His fellow countryman, Roque Olsen, also bagged a brace, while midfielder Luis Molowny Arbelo got his name among the scorers. Di Stefano's impact would go on to inspire Madrid to their first La Liga title in 21 years.

2. Real Madrid 5-0 Barcelona, January 1995

During the previous campaign, Madrid had been on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline at the Camp Nou. On that occasion, Romario netted three goals - a trick that was repeated by Madrid's Chilean striker Ivan Zamorano within the opening 39 minutes during the next campaign at the Bernabeu. Luis Enrique and Jose Emilio Amavisca added further goals after the restart as Madrid crushed an outfit that had become known as 'The Dream Team'.

3. Barcelona 0-2 Madrid, April 2002

Not since the early 1960s had these two met in a European competition. In this first-leg semi-final in Catalonia, the home side dominated proceedings, but ultimately lost out thanks to two chipped efforts. First Zinedine Zidane found the back of the net, before former England international Steve McManaman secured a 2-0 victory in stoppage time. The second leg ended in a 1-1 draw, which meant that Madrid advanced through to the final, which they won against Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park.

4. Barcelona 0-1 Madrid, April 2011

Madrid had watched on with envious eyes as Barcelona, under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, had swatted aside most of the challenges that had been placed in front of them, both domestically and in Europe. In Valencia's Mestalla, though, the night would belong to Jose Mourinho's charges. The Copa del Rey final went to extra time, but as penalties loomed, Cristiano Ronaldo rose highest inside the area to plant a header into the net for what would prove to be the winning goal.

5. Barcelona 1-2 Madrid, April 2012

In the weeks leading up to this game, Barca had been chipping away at Madrid's lead at the La Liga summit. So, when the Whites travelled to the Camp Nou, they did so with a four-point advantage over their hosts, which in turn produced a real feeling of whoever won would go on to be crowned champions. Scrappy goals from Sami Khedira and Alexis Sanchez saw the scores level at one goal apiece, before Ronaldo had the final say in the 73rd minute. It was Barca's first home defeat in 55 outings and Madrid went on to win the title for the first time since 2008.
