Carlo Ancelotti's managerial record vs. Atletico Madrid

Sports Mole looks at Carlo Ancelotti's managerial record against Atletico Madrid ahead of Real Madrid's clash with their rivals on Sunday night.

Carlo Ancelotti will be looking to lead his Real Madrid side to a ninth straight victory this season when Los Blancos make the trip to Atletico Madrid on Sunday night.

The Whites won the UEFA Super Cup early last month, while they have been victorious in their opening two Champions League group fixtures against Celtic and RB Leipzig.

There have also been five straight wins over Almeria, Celta Vigo, Espanyol, Real Betis and Mallorca, with the capital giants boasting a 100% record at this stage of the campaign.

Ancelotti will once again tackle Atletico in the Madrid derby on Sunday, and here, Sports Mole looks at how the Italian has fared against the Red and Whites during his managerial career.

Ancelotti has managed against Atletico on 19 previous occasions, boasting a record of seven wins, five draws and seven defeats in games with the capital outfit.

His first two games against Atletico came in the group stage of the 2009-10 Champions League while in charge of Chelsea, beating them 4-0 at Stamford Bridge before securing a 2-2 draw in the return game in Spain.

Ancelotti actually lost to the Red and Whites in his first Madrid derby, suffering a 1-0 defeat during his first spell at Real Madrid back in September 2013.

The Italian led Los Blancos to a 4-1 victory in the final of the 2013-14 Champions League, while he also helped Real Madrid navigate their way past Atletico in the quarter-finals of the 2014-15 European Cup.

The bulk of Ancelotti's games against Atletico have come while in charge of Real Madrid, but he also faced them twice during his time in charge of Bayern Munich.

Indeed, Ancelotti's Bayern lost 1-0 to Atletico in the group stage of the 2016-17 Champions League in Spain before winning the reverse game in Munich 1-0.

The manager's first Madrid derby since April 2015 proved to be the La Liga game at Bernabeu last season, with Los Blancos running out 2-0 winners over their rivals.

Ancelotti was on the end of a 1-0 loss to Atletico in the league towards the end of last season, but it was a much-changed Real Madrid, who were focusing on the Champions League at the time, having already secured the La Liga title.

The 63-year-old actually lost three straight Madrid derbies between August 2014 and January 2015, with those matches coming in the Spanish Super Cup, La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Ancelotti's managerial record against Atletico is far from disastrous, but it is perhaps not quite as strong as would be expected from one of the most successful coaches of all time. body check tags ::
