The teenager has been involved in the Republic age-group teams.

Southampton striker Michael Obafemi has committed himself to the Republic of Ireland amid speculation that he could turn instead to England or Nigeria.

The 18-year-old has trained with the Republic this week and could be handed his debut against Northern Ireland on Thursday evening, although manager Martin O'Neill revealed on Wednesday that the teenager was unlikely to make a binding competitive appearance in Denmark on Monday.

However amid fears that the Irish-born player could opt instead to represent either England or Nigeria, he has moved to end the uncertainty.

A statement released on his behalf by agents Playerworks CSM said: "Due to current speculation surrounding Michael Obafemi and as Michael's representatives, we would like to go on record to say that we are not in talks with either Nigeria or England, nor is it something we have ever pursued.

"Since (Football Association of Ireland scout) Mark O'Toole spotted Michael early on, he, along with the other staff at Ireland, have given Michael a great opportunity, which he has enjoyed immensely.

"Michael was born in Ireland, so this is the country he naturally wants to play for.

"Martin O'Neill has shown great faith in Michael and he wants to repay that faith by helping the team achieve success.

"Michael is 100 per cent committed to Ireland and is looking forward to an exciting future with the national team."

Obafemi later tweeted a picture of himself wearing an Ireland shirt accompanied by the message "All in".
