Giovanni Trapattoni: 'My future up to FAI'

Giovanni Trapattoni hints that he will not walk away from his position as Republic of Ireland manager, suggesting that his future will be decided by the FAI.

Giovanni Trapattoni has revealed that he expects the Football Association of Ireland to make a decision on his future as Republic of Ireland boss following their almost certain failure to qualify for the World Cup.

A 1-0 defeat in Austria, courtesy of a late David Alaba strike, on Tuesday came just days after a 2-1 loss against Sweden, and those two results leave the Republic all but out of the race to Brazil 2014.

The 74-year-old's contract as Ireland boss expires next summer, and Trapattoni has stated that it is down to the FAI rather than himself to decide if he honours that deal or leaves his post before then.

"It's for the FAI to decide if they want us to continue or finish our agreement," the Italian told reporters.

"It's okay if they decide to change us all, but until then, we will continue because it's not our decision. The FAI will decide what to do, but we have an agreement until May 31 or June 1, I don't know.

"I wasn't joking the other day when I said if I was [FAI chief executive] John Delaney, evaluate what we have done in the last two years and after decide yes or no. It's not my job to do this."

The FAI have announced that they will be conducting a review of Ireland's World Cup qualifying campaign.
