Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots has confirmed that he is in talks with Schalke 04 about a move to the Bundesliga club.
Schalke are searching for a new boss after Roberto Di Matteo resigned from his role last week, and Wilmots quickly emerged as a leading candidate to make the switch to the Veltins Arena.
Despite being still being contracted to Belgium, Wilmots has revealed that he has the option to leave his job at any time to return to club management.
"I am in contact with Schalke and never said that I would stay until 2018 with the national team," he told reporters at Belgium's training camp ahead of the friendly against France and the Euro 2016 qualifier with Wales.
"I can activate my exit clause at any time."
Wilmots, who has been with Belgium since 2012, spent a short spell as interim boss of Schalke in 2003.
