Oleksandr Hladkyy's first-half finish has handed Shakhtar Donetsk a vital 1-0 half-time lead over Fenerbahce in the second leg of their third-round Champions League qualifying clash this evening.
With the two clubs tied at 0-0 on aggregate after the first leg in Turkey, the hosts looked to push ahead as Marlos cut inside and sent in a rasping shot that was smartly kept out by Volkan Demirel.
Fenerbahce almost hit back with a chance of their own when Fernandao rose highest in the box, only to send his header just a few inches over the Donetsk crossbar.
Joao Carlos Teixeira was up next for the home side and he spurned a good opportunity when he fired straight down the throat of Demirel from the centre of the box.
The miss was not to matter too much, however, as Hladkyy made a standout run in the 25th minute to meet Darijo Srna's near-post cross and divert the ball beyond a helpless Demirel in the Fenerbahce goal.
