Charlton set up an FA Cup quarter-final showdown with Sheffield United courtesy of a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round this evening.

Charlton Athletic have set up an FA Cup quarter-final showdown with Sheffield United courtesy of a 2-1 victory over the Blades' city rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round this evening.

The visitors were the first to come close to an opening goal, doing so after 13 minutes when Astrit Ajdarevic put his shot just wide following a scramble in the area.

They wouldn't have to wait too much longer to take the lead, however, as Callum Harriott smashed a half-volley past the keeper from 12 yards in the 22nd minute to break the deadlock.

Wednesday's first effort on target didn't come until seven minutes before the break, when Gary Gardner took advantage of a poor clearance to draw a decent stop out of Ben Hamer.

Hamer was called into action again moments later as he denied Leon Best, although the striker may have been better served playing the ball to Benik Afobe instead of going for goal himself.

Best had another chance moments after the restart having dispossessed a defender and created space to shoot, but he scuffed his effort well wide.

It was third time lucky for Best just before the hour mark, however, as he scored Wednesday's equaliser with a clinical strike after the ball had been flicked on from a free kick.

Charlton were back in front soon enough, though, regaining the lead eight minutes later when Simon Church met Johnnie Jackson's free kick to nod past Damian Martinez.

Wednesday thought that they had found an equaliser in the 73rd minute when Miguel Llera's header came off the inside of the post and rolled across the line, but referee Mark Clattenburg deemed that it had not gone in, much to the dismay of the Owls.

The hosts then squandered a glorious chance to level things up with just three minutes of normal time remaining as Hamer parried the ball straight to Best, whose shot hit a teammate with the goal gaping.

Hamer then rescued his side in the fourth minute of stoppage time as he made an incredible save to deny Chris Maguire's deflected shot, changing direction to stop the effort and send his side into the next round.
