Atdhe Nuhiu's disputed 25th-minute goal has given Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 half-time lead over Yeovil Town, with Byron Webster being sent off for the visitors.
The game started quietly, with neither side able to carve out clear-cut chances, although Michail Antonio headed over from Liam Palmer's right-wing cross after a quarter of an hour.
The home side scored only their sixth goal of the season in the 25th minute, although the away side were far from happy that it was allowed to stand.
Antonio, playing in a slightly withdrawn role behind the lone striker Nuhiu, raced past the Yeovil defence and laid a square ball into the path of the 6'4" forward, who tapped into an empty net.
Yeovil argued long and hard that the Austrian striker was offside but the protests fell on deaf ears.
With less than five minutes to go until half time, a mass brawl erupted on the pitch as players from both sides waded in.
As the players dispersed, Webster was shown a straight red card for violent conduct to leave his side with an uphill battle in the second half.
