Dave Jones is reportedly in "advanced talks" with Sheffield Wednesday over the vacant manager's job.
Gary Megson was sacked on Wednesday night, leaving the club third in the League One table.
Former Cardiff City boss Jones, who was installed as the early favourite to succeed Megson, has now edged nearer to taking charge at Hillsbrough, according to Sky Sports News.
Chairman Milan Mandaric has said that the club hopes to appoint a new manager before Saturday's trip to Rochdale.
