He was rested for Boro's League Cup victory over Burton Albion during the week. David Nugent and Jonathan Woodgate have only been named on the bench.
Adam Forshaw, who has been linked with a trio of Championship clubs this week also takes his place on the bench.
For Sheffield Wednesday, Kieren Westwood remains injured so Lewis Price continues in goal.
Defender Michael Turner, who signed on loan from Norwich City this week, could make his debut from the bench.
