Micky Mellon "gutted" at Chelsea defeat

Micky Mellon says that he is "gutted" after watching his Shrewsbury Town side go toe-to-toe with Chelsea and lose by the odd goal.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon has admitted that he is "gutted" after losing 2-1 to Chelsea in a fourth-round League Cup tie at the Greenhous Meadow Stadium tonight.

The League One outfit gave a good account of themselves against the Premier League leaders after Andrew Mangan cancelled out Didier Drogba's earlier opener.

However, the big pre-match favourites sneaked through to the quarter-final stages after a Jermaine Grandison own goal on 81 minutes ended their hopes of a giant-killing.

"I just said to the players there, if someone would have said that we would have felt gutted and disappointed at the end of a game against Chelsea, we probably would have taken that emotion," he told Sky Sports news.

"It meant we would have been pleased, but we're gutted because we lost it on little bits of detail.

"Losing a goal so early in the second half and then, when we had good possession of the ball on the far side, we fall and they catch us on the break. That's why they're where they are."

Chelsea were one of five teams to book their spot in the last eight tonight, with Derby County, Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Liverpool also progressing.
