How Tottenham Hotspur could line up against Colchester United

Sports Mole looks at how Tottenham Hotspur could line up for their EFL Cup third round clash with Colchester United on Tuesday.

Tottenham Hotspur have the chance to address their poor recent record away from home when they travel to Essex to face Colchester United in the EFL Cup third round on Tuesday.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester City piled the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino's side, who have now gone nine away games without a victory.

They must be wary of a Colchester side which beat Crystal Palace and Swindon Town to reach this stage and whose players will have nothing to lose against the Premier League outfit.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Spurs could line up for the game.

Out: Hugo Lloris (personal reasons), Giovani Lo Celso (hip), Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring)
Doubtful: Juan Foyth (ankle)

Pochettino may have to take a gamble on the fitness of Foyth, who is yet to feature during the 2019-20 campaign after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season, but the game against Colchester is one which the defender would benefit from playing in, whilst also allowing for Toby Alderweireld to have a rest ahead of the meeting with Southampton on the weekend.

Indeed, following a difficult pair of games, using a new-look back four gives Pochettino's primary options a chance to reboot alongside handing Davinson Sanchez, who did not feature against Leicester, a chance to lead the line.

In the full-back area, the Spurs boss can call on two dependable options in Kyle Walker-Peters and Ben Davies, both of whom have delivered at times when Pochettino, either by necessity or choice, has rotated his options, with the pair making four starts between them so far this term.

In the midfield, Pochettino is very likely to use this clash with the League Two side to hand another opportunity to promising 19-year-old midfielder Oliver Skipp, who was on the bench at Leicester and has already made 14 appearances in total for the senior side since making his debut in the EFL Cup against West Ham United in 2018.

Victor Wanyama, who came close to leaving Spurs over the summer, made his first appearance of the season from the bench against Leicester and appears likely to start again at Colchester, while Dele Alli, reduced to just one start this term due to hamstring problems, is also likely to be given a chance to gain some much-needed match fitness.

Another midfielder who came close to leaving over the summer is Christian Eriksen, heavily linked with Real Madrid throughout the transfer window, and the Dane - reduced to just four starts this season - appears to have fallen out of first choice contention under Pochettino as question marks over his future continue to linger. The game against Colchester seems like one in which Eriksen will be allowed to play a senior role.

Lucas Moura, despite his heroics in Europe, continues to dip in and out of this Spurs team, and is often used as a source of cut and thrust in rickety cup games such as these. That he only played in the final few minutes of the Leicester defeat over the weekend could suggest that he is in line to start up front in Harry Kane's absence.

Joining him in a wide centre-forward role, one which allows for Eriksen to play as a kind of false nine, will most likely be Erik Lamela, whose role will be to provide width and energy down the right hand side. However, Pochettino may opt to finally hand a debut to youngster Troy Parrott - a forward who impressed supporters over pre-season.
