Tottenham Hotspur are becoming increasingly confident that Toby Alderweireld will sign a contract extension to remain at the Lilywhites beyond this season, according to a report.
The Belgian had seemed certain to leave Spurs having had a £25m release clause this summer, but no clubs decided to prise the 30-year-old away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
According to The Sun, Tottenham had been resigned to losing Alderweireld to one of the likes of Manchester United or Manchester City, but now believe that he will extend his stay.
Roma had been interested in the former Atletico Madrid defender but could not stump up the £25m required, and instead signed Gianluca Mancini on loan from Atalanta.
Alderweireld has made 161 appearances since completing his £11.5m move to Tottenham in 2015 and has featured in every minute of the Lilywhites' opening two matches of the 2019-20 season.
Tottenham host Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, looking to make it six points from a possible six at home this season.
