Stoke City dominate the opening 45 minutes against Genoa but head into the break level at 0-0 with the Serie A outfit.
The Potters made a confident start and soon went close through Charlie Adam, who forced a save out of Mattia Perin.
Peter Crouch then struck the post with a header before Jonathan Walters was denied by Perin, who was keeping the Italian side in the game.
Genoa had showed little intent until the 39th minute when Thomas Manfredini brought a block out of Potters goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
Stoke finished the half strongly and Perin again produced heroics in the Genoa goal, this time denying Robert Huth.
