Paul Lambert: 'Stoke City can beat the drop this season'

Stoke City manager Paul Lambert insists that his side have the character to beat the drop from the Premier League this season despite their standing in 19th place.

Stoke City boss Paul Lambert has insisted that he is confident of his side beating the drop from the Premier League this season.

The Potters currently find themselves in 19th place in the league standings with nine games to play, but Lambert has claimed that the club can avoid relegation if his players continue to approach their remaining fixtures with the same fighting spirit shown in recent games.

"The spirit among the players at the moment is very good and I think it shows, the way we try to play," said Lambert, according to Sky Sports News.

"Since I've been at the club it's been excellent. I think there's a really good spirit there that they want to climb the table, and overall we've only been beaten once in six.

"We've had a lot of draws in there but at least the form at the moment is pretty decent. It's incredible the way the table is and I think that's the beauty about it.

"We've picked up points everywhere other than in the Bournemouth game [a 2-1 away defeat] and we just need that little bit of luck at certain times. But if keep this spirit and this fighting attribute we've got, then we'll be fine."

Lambert has been able to guide Stoke to just one win in six matches, although his side have only been defeated once during that period too.
