Nathan Ake header ends Stoke City's unbeaten run

Nathan Ake marks his first Premier League start for Bournemouth with the only goal of the game against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

Nathan Ake scored the only goal of the game to end Stoke City's recent six-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and earn Bournemouth three more valuable points.

The on-loan Chelsea defender nodded home from six yards to mark his first league start for the Cherries in style, as the visitors picked up their first victory over the Potters in any competition since February 1991.

A first triumph in seven over their opponents, and also a first ever top-flight win in the month of November, helps lift Bournemouth up to ninth place, while Stoke - who missed a second-half penalty at the bet365 Stadium - are still not fully clear of danger.

Callum Wilson saw a penalty shout rejected 10 minutes in when going down under the challenge of Ryan Shawcross, but Bournemouth soon picked themselves up and came close through a Joshua King strike which Lee Grant did well to keep out.

The Cherries got the breakthrough that they deserved soon after, as Ake met Junior Stanislas's cross into the box to score what proved to be the winning goal 26 minutes in.

Stoke were nearly level prior to the break when Shawcross saw his header cleared off the line by Lewis Cook, while Marko Arnautovic should have done better when picked out in a promising position.

Bournemouth knew that their luck was in five minutes into the second half, with Bojan Krkic failing to convert from the spot after Simon Francis stood on his foot to concede a penalty.

Wilson then glanced wide from a Jack Wilshere cross, before smashing a low drive wide of the near post as both teams desperately looked to find the game's second goal.

There was still time for Stoke, still without three home wins in succession since April 2014 after this setback, to find a leveller, but Arnautovic took the wrong choice when he had Xherdan Shaqiri better positioned alongside him.

Jonathan Walters was the next home player to come close, sending a header down the middle for Adam Federici to collect, yet it was Bournemouth who came closest to sealing things as Wilshere curled his shot against the post.

That near miss did not matter in the end, however, as the Cherries held out to claim all three points in the Potteries.
