Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam believes that tying defender Ryan Shawcross down to a new contract is an important step for the club.
It is believed that the England international will sign a fresh six-year deal at the Britannia Stadium.
"When you've got quality like that, you need to keep it in your group and the manager has always stressed he's one of our best players," The Sentinel quotes Adam as saying.
"This is a good club going forward and Ryan wants to be part of that. He's been here for a number of years. He's seen it from what it was to what it is now and he knows it's progressing. It's good to have people like that at the club."
Shawcross began his career at Manchester United and recent reports had claimed that the former Premier League champions were keen on luring him back to Old Trafford.
