Bolton Wanderers have progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a shock 2-0 victory over Sunderland away from home in their third-round replay.
Chances were few and far between in the opening minutes at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner's free kick after 19 minutes the first real effort from either side.
Two minutes later Adam Johnson forced the first save of the contest when his shot from the edge of the area was tipped over by Bolton goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.
Sunderland continued to have the better chances thereafter in the first half, Gardner drawing out a save from Lonergan with a free kick before Johnson tested the 29-year-old on 40 minutes.
Gardner came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second period with another free kick, before Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet kept out a rare attempt from Marvin Sordell in the 53rd minute.
Mignolet, though, could do nothing in the 64th minute when Sordell stepped up to take a penalty for Bolton.
Jack Colback brought down Darren Pratley inside the Sunderland penalty area, and Sordell made no mistake from the resulting spot kick.
Sordell scored his second goal of the evening nine minutes later when he turned in Tyrone Mears's cross from close range despite a poor first touch.
