The Football Association has charged Sunderland manager David Moyes with misconduct after he was sent to the stands during Wednesday night's EFL Cup defeat to Southampton.
The 53-year-old Scotsman was given his marching orders by referee Chris Kavanagh when he confronted the match official after a late penalty to Sunderland was not awarded in the 1-0 defeat at St Mary's.
As a result of his behaviour, Moyes has been charged with using "abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official".
The former Everton and Manchester United boss, who is yet to guide the Black Cats to a league victory this season, has until 6pm on November 1 to respond to the charge.
Sunderland are currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after nine games and are five points from safety.
