Sunderland defender Titus Bramble has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and being in possession of a Class A drug.
The 30-year-old is currently being questioned by police and is in custody in Stockton-on-Tees.
He was arrested in the Yarm area in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
"A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of a Class A drug," said a Cleveland Police spokeswoman.
"He is currently being questioned by police and inquiries are on-going."
The centre-back featured during the Black Cats' 2-1 loss to Norwich City on Monday evening.
