Gus Poyet: 'Goal should give Jack Rodwell confidence boost'

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet believes that Jack Rodwell's goal against Hull City that earned his side a point should give the midfielder a much-needed boost in confidence.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet feels that Jack Rodwell's strike against Hull City will provide a big confidence boost for the midfielder.

The 23-year-old has struggled to make an impact with the Black Cats this season as he has struggled with injuries and consistency on the pitch.

However, his goal in the 77th minute at the KC Stadium earned Poyet's men a vital point in their battle against the drop, and his manager is hopeful that it will serve as a turning point for the midfielder this season.

Poyet told the club's official website: "It was great for Jack to get the goal and to be honest I'm delighted he was able to play for the full 90 minutes - I didn't expect him to play the full game.

"The goal is great for him and he can create those chances so it's a confidence boost for him. He struggled a bit in the first half but he adapted well in the second half.

"Patrick [van Aanholt] made a great cross for our goal and after that it was all about the finish; if you compare the two goals ours had much more quality."

Sunderland are 16th in the Premier League, four points clear of the relegation zone.
