Substitute Mikael Mandron scored the only goal of the game to give Sunderland the win in their pre-season friendly with Carlisle United this evening.
Mandron was one of a number of youngsters given a run-out in the closing stages, but he needed only 10 minutes to make his mark against the League Two side.
New recruits Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez were both included in the side, with Jones operating at left-back and Gomez part of a three-man central midfield along with Alfred N'Diaye and Cabral.
The hosts frustrated their Premier League opponents throughout, but were unable to make anything of note happen in front of goal.
