Sunderland have reportedly moved closer to securing Lee Cattermole's services for the foreseeable future.
Cattermole played a key role as Dick Advocaat, who signed a one-year contract with the Black Cats on Thursday, led the club away from relegation in the closing stages of the season.
The midfielder has just one year remaining on his contract and there have been suggestions that the situation would attract interest from clubs, including Stoke City, who came close to signing him last year.
However, the Sunderland Echo reports that the club are confident that the 27-year-old will agree to an extension and Advocaat's decision to stay for another season could be vital.
Cattermole is currently Sunderland's longest serving first-team player.
