Five reasons forced Sunderland to allow striker Asamoah Gyan to depart the club on a season-long loan deal, according to chairman Niall Quinn.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has revealed that there were five reasons which contributed to Asamoah Gyan leaving the club.

The Ghanaian striker sealed a season-long loan move to Al-Ain earlier today after the player had reportedly become unsettled with life at the Stadium of Light.

Quinn has now confirmed that it was in the interest of all parties concerned for the deal to go through.

"They [Al-Ain] were very professional but determined to sign the player and at this point we took a number of things into consideration," Quinn told the club's official website.

"The player's obviously negative demeanour in and around the training ground; the fact that the transfer window in the UAE had over 50 days remaining, meaning this was unlikely to go away; the clear desire of the player to leave; the forthcoming African Nations Cup, which would have meant losing Asamoah for up to six weeks in the new year; the obvious economic benefits to our club in the terms of the final deal laid out to us."

The chairman also claimed that an unnamed Premier League club made a move to sign Gyan during the summer.
