A second-half strike from Alex Brosque has earned Sydney FC a 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets in the A-League.
Sydney dominated the opening stages and could have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Filip Holosko was found by Andrew Hoole's cutback, but the Slovakian forward hit the post from close range.
Hoole acted as provider again midway through the first half to put Milos Ninkovic through on goal, but he fired his effort wide of the target.
Holosko had two more opportunities from close range without finding the back of the net, but 12 minutes after the restart, Sydney finally found their opener through Brosque, who latched on to a pass from Ninkovic before firing low into the corner for the 50th goal of his A-League career.
As the match moved towards the closing stages, Holosko continued his quest to find a goal, but he could not get on the scoresheet due to a combination of missing the target and Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.
In added-on time, Nick Cowburn's header for the Jets just missed the far corner, but Brosque's effort proved enough to help Sydney into third spot in the A-League standings.
