West Bromwich Albion manager has urged his side to be "better going forward" following their 0-0 draw away at Southampton this afternoon.
Chances were few and far between at St Mary's Stadium, and although pleading supporters to be patient as his side are "a work in progress" Irvine has said that he wants his side to be more creative with the ball.
"I think both teams had their spells when they controlled things," Irvine told BBC Sport.
"We came here knowing they were a good side and it was important our organisation was good when we didn't have possession. We perhaps didn't create enough when we did have the ball.
"We are a work in progress. It is not where we want to be right now but we are hoping for better going forward."
West Brom have drawn their first two games of the season, as today's result followed their opening-day 2-2 draw with Sunderland at the Hawthorns.
