Queens Park Rangers gave their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League a huge boost with an emphatic 4-1 win away at West Bromwich Albion.

Eduardo Vargas opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark with a long-range drive.

Charlie Austin then headed home midway through the first half and Bobby Zamora lofted a stunning lob over Boaz Myhill to give the Hoops a three-goal lead at the break.

Substitute Victor Anichebe's close-range header gave the Baggies a fighting chance, but that was soon extinguished as Youssuf Mulumbu was sent off for a foul on Joey Barton.

The QPR skipper went on to add a fourth in second-half injury time to help send his side to 18th in the league and just one point from safety, while West Brom stay 14th.

WEST BROM

Goal

Boaz Myhill: Not overly at fault for any of the goals, though his positioning on the opener could have been better. Was off his line for Zamora's strike, but could not have predicted just what would have happened with that third goal. (5/10)

Defence

Chris Baird: Mediocre in the air and largely ineffective overall. (5/10)

Joleon Lescott: Slow in his turning and acceleration, and poor in the tackle and in the air. (4/10)

Gareth McAuley: Quiet and ineffective in the first half, much like the rest of the back line, though he picked it up after the restart. (5/10)

Midfield

James Morrison: Tried to spur his side on and was unafraid to switch to the flank to help his full-backs out. (6/10)

Stephane Sessegnon: A poor, ineffective display that saw him substituted at half time. (4/10)

Craig Gardner: Tireless in attack, a constant menace in the final third and nearly scored early in the second half. (7/10)

Darren Fletcher: Dictated proceedings in midfield and pushed forward as his arsenal of passes and crosses cut through the QPR defence on various occasions. (7/10)

Chris Brunt: A constant menace, sending in cross after cross and dominating his flank, though he was ultimately let down by those in front of goal who could not make the most of his delivery. (8/10)

Attack

Saido Berahino: Largely ineffective in the first half, he was brighter after the restart but was guilty of missing a golden chance late on that would have pegged his side back to within a goal. (6/10)

Brown Ideye: Much like Berahino, he was dangerous in the final third but was not clinical enough to get himself on the scoresheet. (6/10)

Substitutes

Jonas Olsson: Did a good job of strengthening the Baggies defence after coming on. (6/10)

Youssuf Mulumbu: Somewhat of a wasted substitution as he was sent off just 12 minutes after coming on for a clash with Barton. (4/10)

Victor Anichebe: A catalyst who gave his previously anodyne side a much-needed boost after the break, getting a goal in the process. (7/10)

QPR

Goal

Robert Green: Had little to do in the first half and made several decent saves in the second. Not at fault for the opposition goal on the hour. (7/10)

Defence

Steven Caulker: A rock in defence, he was constantly clearing balls out of the box and nullifying Brunt's incisive crosses as best he could. (8/10)

Yun Suk-young: Made several worthy interceptions, but was not as effective as his teammates, though that could have been because of his injury. (6/10)

Nedum Onuoha: Another sturdy display as he made a succession of clearances and kept the resurgent Baggies at bay in the second half. (7/10)

Mauricio Isla: Arguably the worst player on the pitch for QPR today, he was second best to Brunt and offered little in the final third. (5/10)

Midfield

Sandro: Remained somewhat stuck in the middle of the park, offering little going back or forward. (6/10)

Joey Barton: A mixed display as he was booked and anonymous at times, but also made several good plays and got himself a goal. (6/10)

Matty Phillips: Misplaced a host of passes, but made some good runs and was instrumental in helping set up Zamora's stunning goal. (6/10)

Eduardo Vargas: Was hauled off on the half-hour mark with an injury but was a bright spark before then, striking a wonderful goal to open the scoring. (7/10)

Attack

Bobby Zamora: Conceded a number of free kicks and was not the best passer on the day, but scored a wonderful goal that is sure to be remembered for a long time by those QPR fans in attendance. (7/10)

Charlie Austin: Scored with a neat diving header and was very tidy in his possession. (7/10)

Substitutes

Clint Hill: Made little impact after coming on with just eight minutes to go. (6/10)

Nico Kranjcar: Came on for Vargas in the first half and proved effective, sending a header across the face of the net to set up Austin's goal. (7/10)

Karl Henry: Did little of note except concede two free kicks that could have impacted on his team. (5/10)
