A second-half strike from Luis Guztavo earned Wolfsburg a point in their Bundesliga clash against Mainz 05 at the Coface Arena.
The home side had the perfect start to the game as they took the lead in the seventh minute when Niko Bungert rose highest in the box to head Johannes Geis's cross past Diego Benaglio and into the net.
Mainz nearly had a second goal as Geis lifted another dangerous cross into the box, but Stefan Bell could only guide his header inches over the bar.
Geis himself almost doubled his side's advantage as he beat his man outside the box before crashing an effort at goal, which beat the outstretched hand of Benaglio but clattered off the crossbar.
Just before half time, Shinji Okazaki thought that he had fired the home side into a 2-0 lead, but his strike was ruled out for offside, while Kevin de Bruyne forced Loris Karius into a smart stop at the other end,
In the second half, Wolfsburg upped the ante to get back into the game and came close when Gustavo rattled the post with a stinging strike from outside the box.
However, one minute later, the Brazilian did find the target as he beat Karius from close range to get his side back on level terms.
Both teams traded chances when Bungert was denied his second goal of the game by a good clearance from Naldo, while De Bruyne saw his effort saved by Karius.
Mainz had one late opportunity when Yunus Malli managed to break free through the middle and surge towards goal, but, just when he was about to shoot, Timm Klose got back at the midfielder to make a crucial tackle to save his team.
