Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he planned to put Nico Rosberg under pressure to try to force a mistake from his teammate at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver overtook the Drivers' Championship leader shortly after their pit-stops when the German pushed too hard into the first corner to run wide, allowing Hamilton to take the lead and win the race.

The 2008 world champion told Sky Sports News: "All those experiences you have, like Canada, you know that if you apply the pressure that it is a possibility. You never know if it's going to happen, but all you can do is try.

"When you are in a race nothing really surprises you. I wanted to apply pressure. I knew that if I got to the end and tried to apply the pressure then I wouldn't be able to get past.

"When the tyres were good, I wanted to use them up and apply the pressure, I've done it in a couple of other races and it's been proved to work quite well."

Hamilton and Rosberg collided during the previous race in Belgium, forcing the Briton to retire.
