Franco Colapinto's chances of joining Red Bull-owned RB for the 2025 season appear slim, according to Dr. Helmut Marko.
At the Mexican Grand Prix, it was reported by Sky Italia's Roberto Chinchero that Red Bull had extended an offer to the Argentine rookie, who has been performing well after replacing Logan Sargeant at Williams.
"It's an unusual situation," Marko told Kleine Zeitung. "He didn't stand out in any junior category. Of course he was good, but not exceptional."
Despite this, Colapinto managed to catch Red Bull's attention with his poised and composed performances in Formula 1, having been thrown into the mix similar to Liam Lawson.
Marko confirmed that conversations were initiated with Colapinto's management. "In Formula 1, everyone talks to everyone," he said. However, a deal for the 2025 season seems unlikely due to the Argentine driver's current contract obligations with Williams.
"The problem with him is that he has a long-term contract with Williams," Marko explained. Although Williams boss James Vowles has reportedly offered to loan Colapinto to another team, Marko dismissed the option, stating, "That is not interesting for any team.
"We are also in a good position with our own junior drivers. We are not going to train anyone for another team."
Yuki Tsunoda, who has already been confirmed for 2025, remains a key part of RB's lineup. Since Austin, he has been partnered with Liam Lawson, who took over from Daniel Ricciardo. Lawson is also considered a potential replacement for Sergio Perez at Red Bull Racing next year, but when asked about his prospects for 2025, the New Zealander responded, "To be honest, I haven't the faintest idea."
Tsunoda, backed by Honda, faces additional pressure due to Honda's looming departure to Aston Martin for 2026. Though not seen as a top contender for Red Bull Racing's lineup, Tsunoda has managed to secure a test in the team's 2024 car following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Tsunoda remarked, "I have become accustomed to how difficult it is to get even a one-day test for someone who has been better than most of his teammates in previous years."
He hinted at underlying factors affecting his situation, adding, "There are probably some things going on behind the scenes that I'm not aware of." body check tags ::
