Europe Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley insists that his team do not need to "panic" after losing this morning's fourballs session at Gleneagles.

Europe Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has insisted that there is "no need for panic" after his players lost the fourballs session this morning at Gleneagles.

The defending champions are currently trailing the USA by one point after Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley won match four over Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia on the final hole.

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson earned Europe's first point of the day, while Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer settled for half a point in Scotland.

It was a disappointing session for Ian Poulter and rookie Stephen Gallacher, who suffered a heavy defeat to USA rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

"The 18th hole wasn't kind to us, we didn't play it well," McGinley told Sky Sports News. "Sixteenth hole as well we didn't play it well. Fourteen, 16 and 18 are going to be crucial holes this week and we didn't play them well today.

"It's a long road, there's no need for panic. Unfortunately it's another session lost. We're getting in a habit now of losing sessions so it's important we have a good afternoon today."

The scoreline is currently 2.5-1.5 in the Americans' favour, but the players are back on the course for the foursomes session.
