Dinamo Bucharest midfielder Patrick Ekeng has passed away after collapsing on the field during his team's league match with Viitorul on Friday night.
The 26-year-old is believed to have fallen to the ground in the 70th minute of the match in the Romanian capital and he was rushed to hospital as doctors desperately attempted to resuscitate him.
Those attempts proved unsuccessful, however, and although unconfirmed, it is being widely reported that Ekeng suffered a cardiac arrest seven minutes after entering the field of play as a substitute.
According to the Washington Post, players and staff travelled with Ekeng to the Floreasca Emergency Hospital, while "dozens of fans" gathered outside.
Ekeng, who has previously played for Spanish outfit Cordoba, made two appearances for Cameroon.
