Los Angeles Galaxy winger Robbie Rogers has admitted that he never expected his decision to come out as gay to have as large an impact as it has.
The former Leeds United player opened up about his sexuality back in February last year by writing a blog post on his official website.
Since then, the 26-year-old has received widespread support, as well as helped younger people dealing with their own sexuality.
"I didn't realise how big of a deal it was going to be," Rogers told Mr Porter's online magazine The Journal. "I didn't have any idea that it would reach people around the world or the impact it would have, especially on younger people. I mean, I'm happy it happened that way but it wasn't my master PR plan."
Rogers announced his retirement after being released by Leeds last year in February, but returned to football with LA Galaxy three months later.
