Professional Footballers' Association chairman Clarke Carlisle has admitted that he is "embarrassed" by the controversial set carried out by comedian Reginald D. Hunter at last night's awards ceremony.
The American regularly used the n-word and made jokes about Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who was banned by the Football Association for eight games for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra last season.
"As the chairman I am embarrassed," the Daily Mail quotes Carlisle as saying. "I apologise unreservedly and it won't happen again on my watch. I thought that we made a really gross error in judgement in who we selected for our entertainment last night.
"I was embarrassed. All that has gone on in football over the past few years, with everything that we purport to stand for, his set was inappropriate, it really was."
The controversy could have overshadowed Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale's achievements of winning both the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.
