A Watford supporter is critically ill in hospital with a severe head injury after he was the victim of an unprovoked attack at the end of yesterday's Championship match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 44-year-old and his group of friends were outnumbered and assaulted in Littles Lane just after 5pm as they made their way to the train station after watching the two promotion hopefuls play out a 2-2 draw at Molineux.

Both clubs have today released statements on the incident and urged any supporters who know any details to contact West Midlands Police and assist their investigation.

A statement from the police read: "The group of friends were completely outnumbered and the victim suffered a severe head injury which has left him in a critical condition in hospital.

"His family have been informed and we are in the process of taking statements from witnesses and locating any CCTV which might have captured those responsible for the attack."

Wolves said that they would offer whatever help they could to aid the investigation.

"As a club we deplore any violence in or around football matches, and we will work closely with the relevant authorities to help bring the perpetrator, or perpetrators, to justice," said chief executive officer Jez Moxey.

"All right-minded football supporters will share in our disgust at this violent incident, and I would implore anyone with any information to contact the police."

Anyone with any information is urged to contact 101.
