Gloucester Rugby have been beaten 41-31 by Biarritz Olympique at Kingsholm Stadium in the quarter-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup.
Teddy Thomas touched down twice in the first half while Arnaud Heguy also went over for the visitors following Mike Tindall's opening try.
Freddie Burns added nine points with the boot for Gloucester compared to 11 from Dimitri Yachvili as Biarritz went in 27-14 ahead at the break.
Burns then reduced the deficit seven minutes into the second half with his fourth penalty of the night.
However, tries from Benoit Baby and Seremaia Burotu, both converted by Yachvili, gave Biarritz a comfortable cushion with five minutes left to play.
Gloucester launched a minor fightback in the final stages as Shane Monahan and Huia Edmond both touched down, but it was not enough to stop them exiting the competition.
